Welcome to Japan
Tourism and design of the 1920-30s

Against a backdrop of maintenance of transportation networks of railroad or route, the times of global overseas travel boom came after World War I. Tourist comes to flock by (about 1911) and completion of Panama Canal (1914) international airline of south Manchurian railroad by communication with Trans-Siberian Railroad from foreign countries in Japan.

We started the International Tourist station in 1930, and Japanese Government presented foreign visitor invitation campaign for "tourism nation" and we mobilized painter and designer and emphasized "beautiful Japan" externally. Such a sightseeing campaign worked, and there was weak yen effect again, and foreign tourists exceeded 40,000 at the mid-1930s, and the offtake exceeded 100 million yen, and tourism industry greatly accomplished growth as important industry to occupy cotton textiles, raw silk, the amount of foreign currency acquisition of the fourth place next to artificial silk textile.

We investigate Japanese image rising through government offices such as the Japan tourist bureau and International Tourist station, poster, pictorial magazine, brochure which shipping companies such as Nippon Yusen or Osaka merchant ship produced again from tourist attractions and there in those days Japanese at this exhibition.
