"THE SNAP SHOT"
(c)Michio Washio

Washio is born in Tokyo in 1941. After graduating from sailor school, we continued living a marine life as the crew of overseas route of cargo boat about work of sailor for more than 11 years and went round countries more than 50 countries. We are greatly impressed by collection of photographs "the family of man" which we took in hand in bookstore of country visited by chance and begin to take photograph. Denied work of sailor at the same time as the first private exhibition was decided in Nikon salon and seemed to decide afterwards to live with one photograph. We were invited to foundation of a periodical "FOCUS" which we prepared for (Shinchosha) in those days and, triggered by display of "face, et cetera" that photographed resident of Kotobuki-cho by close-up, continued always having work, theme of the side as editorial department exclusive belonging photographer for 20 years before suspending publication and we opened private exhibition regularly and did and were active.

As for this exhibition, you see work which arrested scenery and people of Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Okinawa including foreign photograph which feeling of strain and guilty conscience of taking person photographed from collection of photographs "THE SNAP SHOT" which he to be attractive of snap published in 2007 in the sailor times titled "THE SNAP SHOT".

"FOCUS" which we launched in 1981 greatly used careful doorstepping coverage and one piece of photograph for catch phrase in "we read the times in photograph" and was existence of pioneer of weekly photo magazine which developed article to let photograph talk than letter. He felt importance of communication from experience that met people of various countries as sailor, and he who wore posture not to be timid about kept the experience alive for work production of oneself at coverage.

Mysterious sign drifts in which photograph including look of old man whom we speak to whether it is man, what of sunglasses which bend group, the body of raccoon dog put to fill boy, the screen, and walk downtown of black staring at sit-in camera in ground from glance and appearance of subject and gives strong impression to us.

Act to point camera to person is that there is courage, but, in the present age when communication with others is thin, there are invisible fact and relationship that we cannot build if one step of side to take does not step. We clash with person head-on, and, from work which we photographed while taking communication tenaciously, the exchanges of invisible thought are felt to eyes, and essential part which subject has is strongly drawn.
It is in work group that human smell that interest and curiosity for his subject strongly appear in each photograph, and exposed light to the side in the times when it continues progressing is felt.
