Photo exhibition ... of ... late Tokugawa period, Meiji
"Satsuma clansman Group of samurai of the Satsuma Clan."
About 1868 (c1868) albumenized paper hand coloring
Ferry Che beato (Felice Beato) is born in Venice of Italy in 1832 and is brought up in Constantinople (existing Istanbul) from 1844, and it is said that we learned photograph technology from photographer, James Robertson of brothers of justice. We photographed old battlefields such as Crimean War, the first India independence war, the second Opium War, and beato which got to know Charles waguman of painter in China visited Japan in (1863) with the help of waguman which visited Japan earlier in 1863 and stayed in Japan to (1884) for approximately 20 years in 1884.

Because it was difficult for foreigner at the time to photograph Japan freely, there were many Yokohama of opening of a port place and shooting in Nagasaki, but beato went together in missions which visited Japan, and it could turn around, and not only scenery but also various hierarchies and manners and customs of people of occupation photographed various parts of Japan, too. Large size photograph of clear image by his reliable technique is valuable document conveying Japanese state in those days at the present without staying in Japan like him for long term, and there being almost photographer leaving many photographs. In addition, we were able to know action in Japan of beato by description that they left for partially because there was photograph concerned with rusan of painter and Longfellow of tourist in this including waguman where there were beato and friendship.

In "Japanese Part1 which ferry Che beato looked at which we held in last August," you saw mainly on scenery photograph of various parts of Japan, but, mainly on manners and customs photograph which we copied Japanese everyday life or occupation in those days into from beato work of this hotel possession this time of the latter part, display approximately 100 points. There are many works which seem to be expressed from the late Tokugawa period to surprise and impression that beato saw in Japan which we visited in these photographs which runs early in the Meiji era, and was photographed for the first time and friendly feeling.

For example, probably, as for being written down on mount of photograph which beautiful woman sits down on beside charcoal brazier with long pipe with "Native mode of sitting.", it is thought that this is because custom to sit down on floor directly was seen in beato of Westerner strangely. In addition, let Japanese play state of execution of criminal of exclusion of foreigners case or state of investigation of criminal in studio, and beato seems to leave as possible thing which oneself saw for photograph from photograph reproducing the way; have an impression.

In addition, spot of the Namamugi Incident, Kamakura case that two officers were killed in the U.K., beato including Shimonoseki battery after war with fleet in four countries display work which showed abilities as news photographer.
