From industrial arts to KOGEI

We defined the invisible immaterial "skill" that specific individual and group including not only visible tangible "things" such as building and picture, industrial art object (tangible cultural property) but also industrial arts and entertainment handed down Cultural Properties Protection Act enforced in 1950 (Showa 25) and acquired by experience as "intangible cultural asset" and decided to plan preservation and utilization. It is epoch-making system that the world does not have kind, and many countries evaluate the significance of existence today.
When "Cultural Properties Protection Act" is revised in 1954 (Showa 29), we appoint the important "skill" as important intangible cultural property among intangible cultural assets, and system to authorize person acquiring the "skill" by experience highly as "holder" of important intangible cultural property (living national treasure) is established, and existence of the skill of high folkcraft of value will be shown through work in art concretely particularly in history afterwards.
And it may be said that we played a big role that Japanese folkcraft exhibition that first exhibition was held in the same year stream down splendor of folkcraft to people by superior industrial arts work based on such tradition technology and produces superior writer of most to want to be folkcraft with it.
Height of quality as "KOGEI" is evaluated not Craft, and Japanese "industrial arts" which accomplished original development by effort of guides is going to get chance that right sends to the world today. Therefore we survey "now" of folkcraft for Japanese folkcraft exhibition having reached the 60th and want to fix our eyes on "the future" this autumn. We plan preservation and utilization of "the skill", and aim of system of designation, authorization of important intangible cultural property is to tell in history, but industrial artist who included the holder is going to build new tradition by creating work based on not only tradition of "the skill" but also personal sense of beauty. We introduce such a will with masterpiece of 97 active writers showing new idea and deep thought by book exhibition.
